How the loan is calculated

The payment uses the annuity formula: the same amount every month, with more interest at the start and more principal toward the end.

P = S × r / (1 − (1 + r)−n), r = rate / 12 / 100

The true cost of credit accounts for the arrangement fee reducing the cash you receive, and for insurance and service charges added to every payment. It’s the rate at which all your payments equal the money you actually received.

FAQ

How do I calculate a personal loan payment?

Most banks use an annuity payment: P = S × r / (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where r is the monthly rate and n is the term in months. The calculator shows the payment, overpayment and schedule.

What is the true cost of credit (APR)?

It’s the real annual rate including all mandatory payments: arrangement fees, insurance and service charges. It’s almost always higher than the advertised rate. The calculator estimates it from your inputs.

Is it worth repaying a loan early?

Usually yes: interest accrues on the outstanding balance, so the sooner it shrinks, the less you overpay. The exception is when that money is better kept in your emergency fund.

How much can I spend on loans?

A safe level is up to 30–40% of income across all loans combined. Above that, the risk of not coping if you lose income grows.
